37 Degrees
37 is a magic number for humans . Disregarding race , gender , religion, socio-economic group, age or other factors . The health of an individual human is dependent upon maintaining a consistent body temperature that is on or around 37 degrees Celsius.
Our bodies rely upon thousands of inter-dependant biological processes constantly working within us . Working to maintain our physical being so that we can experience the mental, emotional and spiritual insights that perhaps separate us from other living creatures .
When one looks at these processes deep inside the body one finds an amazing abundance of colour and vibrancy, of energy and dynamism. Of creativity and vivacity , indeed the essence of life itself . The essence of being human is colourful , exciting and full of colourful inspiration .
Karen has tried to convey these senses in a series of canvases .
The paintings include 6 sections ;
1. Sentinels - This includes the surface layer of the body ( skin and sense organs )
2. Foundations - The structure of the body, bones , connective tissue and muscle .
3. Exchanges - Respiratory and circulatory transport mediums . Gas exchange and oxygen transport .
4.Controls - The brain and the bodies nervous system. 37 degrees keeps us constant, we sweat when hot , shiver when cold , we make energy by getting glucose out of store .
5.Defences - This includes essential processes to keep us healthy and fight bacteria and viruses ( pathogens ) Antibodies are our bodies fighters and a part of a wide range of defences in our bodies .
6.Replication- cell division and reproduction.
